A Voyage to Arcturus by David Lindsay book cover

Attending a séance in the Hampstead home of wealthy merchant Montague Faull, Maskull receives the most extraordinary invitation: to take a trip to distant Tormance, a habitable planet orbiting the binary star Arcturus. Unable to refuse so bizarre an opportunity, the adventurous Maskull soon finds himself on a journey far stranger than he could ever have imagined. On Tormance, his body sprouts new limbs and new organs of perception, he sees colours that do not exist on Earth, he encounters beings who fight one another with the mere force of their will, he hears music that can drive you mad and even kill, he witnesses strange new forms of life popping into existence before his very eyes, he sees visions, talks to philosophers and murderers, lovers and mystics — and all the time finds himself swayed by supernatural forces fighting for his very soul.

This classic novel defies easy categorisation: a voyage to another planet that owes more to the séance than science, a quest fantasy whose aim is to unveil the very nature of reality. First published in 1920, A Voyage to Arcturus has attracted praise from the likes of C S Lewis, J R R Tolkien, Philip Pullman, Colin Wilson, Michael Moorcock, Clive Barker and Alan Moore, and continues to fascinate readers to this day.

Many modern editions of A Voyage to Arcturus use an edited, modernised version of the original text. With this hardback, produced after consulting the 1920 first edition, the intention is to provide a reliable, corrected text for serious students of David Lindsay’s work, and for anyone who wants to read an authentic version of this classic novel.
